Project S.N.A.P. Partners with Detroit Zoo in Celebration of 80th Anniversary
Jan 6th, 2009 | By Michael | Category: Recent Mosaic Murals, UncategorizedThe Detroit Zoological Society and Project S.N.A.P. joined together to celebrate the 2008 Year of the Frog Youth Art Competition and the 80th Anniversary of the Detroit Zoos. The mosaic murals are on display at the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Zoo.
Incorporating the artwork of thousands of Michigan children, the murals depict a Wyoming Toad and an Eastern Tiger Salamander. The murals were designed by Project S.N.A.P.’s art director Roy Feinson, who has also created mosaic murals for special celebrations including Disneyland’s 50th anniversary and the 50th Anniversary of the Grammy Awards.
More than 2,400 school children from Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties leapt at the opportunity to communicate the importance of amphibians in the competition and mosaic mural exhibition.
Students expressed their interpretations of Michigan frogs, toads and salamanders, as well as images of amphibian residents at the Detroit Zoo’s National Amphibian Conservation Center. All works submitted are represented in the mosaic murals. In addition, artwork from the Project S.N.A.P. treasury of art created by students were included.
Year of the Frog was a global public awareness campaign to focus attention on endangered amphibians and the critical work being done by zoos and aquariums to save them. The Detroit Zoological Society is supporting the worldwide initiative with special events, fundraising activities, educational opportunities and community outreach efforts throughout the year.
The Detroit Zoological Society is a non-profit organization that operates the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Zoo.
