Developing 21st Century Green Leaders
Aug 14th, 2008 | By Michael | Category: Preserving the EarthThe Issue
Currently, informal environmental education has focused primarily on studnets in high school and college. There are very few programs that are specifically designed for elementary school students that also impact their families and the community. By engaging students and families during the elementary school years in “hands on” leadership and environmental learning/action programs, it is possible to promote a long lasting impact on hte community as studnets learn by doing, leading the way on saving energy, minimizing waste and preserving the earth’s resources.
Program Goals
The Project S.N.A.P. 21st Century Green Leadership Program is an expansion of the Project S.N.A.P. Community Mosaic Mural Program which has been successfully implemented in communities around the country. This program is a unique non-formal interactive environmental education program for elementary schools. This program for K-5 students teaches about social responsibility and leadership as they learn about and take action to:
- save energy
- minimize waste
- help raise awareness about ways to preserve the earth and its resources at home and in their community
Program Outcomes
The Project S.N.A.P. 21st Century Green Leadership Program is a national program designed specifically for grades K-5 and offers a complete and fully integrated program delivered in five phases with an introduction of key concepts to students followed by specific actions that involve green literacy, self expression, creating awareness for others and taking action. This program also includes resources for educators so that the program can be more accessible to more schools in a broader geographic area.
